muslims.jpg

Tomorrow at 5PM PST, 7PM CST, 8PM EST, I will be joined in the Rainydawg studio with The Muslims, the Indie-Rock band hailing from San Diego, CA. They will be joining me for an interview and a couple of songs. Be sure to tune in, and check back later for an archive of the songs/interview. It will certainly be worth listening to. Lately, this band has been blowing up. Get hyped!

Why? Live at the Vera Project (04.17.2008)

2422146497_0b65e76fe2.jpg

The band Why? sold out the Vera Project a few weeks back in mid- April. The band put on an amazing performance which blew me away. The individuals in the band are extremely down to earth and hospitable. One of the great things about the Vera Project is that it is, essentially, run by volunteers. I decided to volunteer for this show and was treated to a vegan meal with the band. I talked to Austin, the bass and guitar player of the band, at length. Subjects varied from college to travel to music and everyday life. Anyways, without a doubt one of the most positive concert experiences in my recent memory.

Enough hesitation, here’s a recording of the live set:
Waterfalls
500 Fingernails
The Vowels Pt. II
Good Friday
These Few Presidents
Song of the Sad Assassin
The Hoofs
Yo Yo Bye Bye
Rubber Traits
The Hollows
Gnashville
Crushed Bones
A Sky for Shoeing Horses
Gemini (Birthday Song)
By Torpedos or Crohn’s

Quite the lengthy set from this established trip-hop band. Alopecia is out in stores now on CD and Vinyl. Pick it up here.

Kudos to joshc’s flickr stream for the photo. My film is currently getting developed as I have not made the digital jump. Film photography for the win!

Hour 1

Hour 2

Death Cab Performs for Daytrotter, I did not see this coming.

Let me start by saying that Daytrotter illustration of Ben Gibbard is priceless.

If you don’t know, Daytrotter is by far my favorite music site. What they offer to the masses is an amazing library of free live studio-recorded songs from tons and tons of Indie Bands. Every once in a while, Daytrotter manages to grab a name out of left field that I’d never expect to see on their site. Today, I was shocked to see that Death Cab for Cutie performed six songs for the site. Two of which are from the upcoming, omgz not yet to be leaked, album Narrow Stairs.

Here’s a stylized version of Cath. I still prefer the acoustic version found here. Narrow Stairs comes out May 13 and can be purchased at amazon

The Daytrotter session can be found here.

New Joan of Arc, “Boo Human”, to be released May 20.

It has been almost two full years since Joan of Arc’s last full length album, Eventually, All at Once, was released. Now all you Kinsella lovers, including me, can exhale, and simply count down the days till May 20, when Joan of Arc’s 11th Album, Boo Human, is to be released. The station should be getting it soon, and it will be going for adds shortly thereafter. From what I’ve heard off it, the album is incredibly solid. Seems to back up the bittersweet taste that the EP of The One Up Downstairs left us with. Here’s a song off their upcoming album. It’s titled, A Tell-Tale Penis. Yes, I wrote that correctly. B-More and Poe love, represent.

Joan of Arc will be playing the Vera Project with 31 Knots June 1. Hopefully Joan of Arc will be able to join us in the studio here at Rainydawg Radio.

This Time Tomorrow, I’ll Be Working for the Weekend.

So these past few week have been a bit hectic. I’ve been promoting my Georgie James interview and have been fortunate enough to work with some other blogs to get the word out. All the tracks are on hypemachine, so that’s worth being excited about.  In regards to other music, I’ve been listening to some great stuff. I picked up the new Unwed Sailor, Little Wars, from Easy Street on Monday. I need to keep listening to get a feel, but so far it’s been one of the best alums I’ve heard all year. It’s definitely worth checking out. Anything Unwed Sailor has done has been nothing short of spectacular in my eyes. It’s like sex in your ears, I swear.

I’ve also been listening to a few tracks by The Muslims. Gorilla vs Bear blogged about them here. They were also recently Stereogum’s artist to watch. I’m happy to say that I’ll be interviewing them on the 30th of April. As always, I’ll post the interview and songs in full on here shortly after it takes place. I thank the Muslims for their time and effort in making this happen.

Speaking of in-studios we have some great ones coming up at Rainydawg Radio.  This includes The Terrordactyls on April 26. I’m also talking to Fleet Foxes and Unwed Sailor for potential in-studios. Stay tuned for more information on that.

Concluding my brief write-up of music I’ve been listening to is the melodies of Neva Dinova’s latest album You May Already Be Dreaming.  I just grabbed it from the studio today, as I get along with everything on Saddle Creek. This is no exception. I’ll be ordering this on vinyl ASAP. Saddle Creek also includes a Neva Dinova themed medicine bottle with fake candy pills, a bit morbid and twisted, but I guess it’s just for kicks. It’s funny, because Neva Dinova’s sound is exactly what I’ve been craving lately. I’m so late to the party on this band, but if you haven’t checked them out yet surely do so.

I leave you with music, maybe I’ll be a good person and do some write-ups for shows I’ve been to. No promises. I’m still waiting on the Terrordactyls in-studio to finish the roll of film I shot at the Why? Show.

Yesterday, one of my favorite bands of all time, Piebald, held their final show in Cambridge, MA. If there was one show I wish I could make it to this year, it would be that one. Sadly, I’m all the way across the country. Piebald was always an eccentric and goofy band I’d turn on to feel good or just to cruise to. Yes, I shed a tear while watching this video. So what.

In other news, I apologize for not updating this blog recently. I’ve been busy with the music life. I attended the Why? show on Thursday and then Death Cab on Friday. Then I had my radio show last night, and I’m contemplating going to Rilo Kiley tonight. Expect write-ups and material from all those events in the coming days. Take care.

Update: I just got the chills watching this video. They put on a 2:20 set for their final show, crazy.

Georgie James Interview (04/11/2008) on Rainydawg Radio

2407336352_babb3cd342.jpg

Yesterday I had the pleasure of interviewing John Davis and Laura Burhenn of Georgie James. It was certainly a great experience. Both John and Laura are extremely authentic and kind people. I always get a breath of fresh air when I meet musicians who are down to earth and have a palpable love for music. When performing, you could tell both of them believed in their music and were shut off from the world, in their own personal alcoves. I leave you with the songs performed and the full interview I had with Georgie James.

Definitely check out their debut album Places, as well as the newly pressed Cake Parade 7″ off of Saddle Creek (A digital download of the single and B-Sides can be found on the iTunes store as well).

My extreme gratitude goes out to John and Laura for joining us in the studio at Rainydawg. I wish them the best of luck on their current acoustic tour.

The New Amsterdams Interview has been Postponed

Hey everyone. I’m sad to declare that The New Amsterdams interview will not be happening today. Matthew Pryor emailed me yesterday and let me know that their van broke down. Hopefully he’ll be able to make it out to the show tonight. I’ll try my best at getting in, despite it being 21+. Matthew and I will try to reschedule sometime early Fall while he is out promoting his new solo album. Sorry for the inconvenience. Thanks.
